The pierced form in carved wood or stone is a concept artists Hepworth and Moore have utilized very well. The concept of creating space within, then simultaneously drawing the eye through the form and then finally elevating the entire form, so that it floats free of restraint, is what intrigues and challenges me. Over the past few years have gone deeper into my exploration of the mystery and spirit which lies within the wood or stone. I have a fascination with how ancient cultures have used gateways and stone structures as passageways to other worlds and dimensions. A simple basic form becomes active once it is pierced and you can see through it. This for me is always thrilling, whether a hole worn through a beach pebble or a ancient archway.
